    ANSWER: They will not. It is not in their commercial interests to do so. They are just not that into us.

    Very true. But I think as well as the good answer that follows there is something else that needs to change.
    And that is the continuing perception by members of the public, and even of policymakers and directors etc that online is cheap or free. There are costs incurred in buying anything and ebooks (and ejournals) are even more of an issue here in the UK as they are not VAT exempt so cost more than the print editions.
    People might want ebook contents from libraries but if it is costing more than the print it’s pretty much a nobrainer when you look at the work and the cost. Decisions have to be made and realistically now theres no way it can go ahead.
    Maybe when they realise (as the music industry has now done) that it is better to sell more of a cheaper product than have no sales and higher piracy things can change.

    I still believe the answer I posted on Closed Stacks that if “we” (the collective library we) went to publishers with the total $$$ we have to spend on econtent, we could get contracts that benefit us.

    Because it’s a hell of a lot of money that we need to spend each and every fiscal year.
