\”A book about black basketball players in New York\’s inner city has been banned in response to a parental complaint that it is vulgar. But the eighth-grade English teacher who has used the novel for years is fighting the decision.

Teacher Jane Walter has filed a union grievance over removal of the book Hoops from the school\’s curriculum. She said she won\’t be happy until she is allowed to use the novel in class.

Vanlue Principal Jeffrey Snook pulled the novel from Ms. Walter\’s classroom last month when Joel and Carol Yeater complained about its content. In a letter to the Yeaters, Mr. Snook said that he shared their concerns.

\”As principal of the school, I do not wish for the students to work with books that use that type and amount of vulgarity,\” he wrote.

Mr. Snook and Vanlue Superintendent Stephen Puchta refused to comment other than to say that the issue is being dealt with \”internally.\”

\”We\’re handling it. We\’re aware of it. We\’re working through it,\” Mr. Puchta said. \”We will work with the people involved.\”
