\”For its prize in a citywide competition, the student body got to visit Friday with Ashley Bryan, a renowned African- American author, artist and illustrator.\”
\”Carter Park librarian Phyllis Evans said her students were pumped up.\”
\”They were very responsive,\” Evans said. She said they were particularly excited about meeting with Bryan.\”
\”Having a noted author and artist whose work represents all the cultures of the world is particularly appreciated at our school,\” Evans said.\”
\”She said the school is about 50 percent African-American, 30 percent Mexican-American, 10 percent Vietnamese and 3 percent or 4 percent Kurdish; students of several other ethnic origins also attend.
\”The real prize is that the kids get a library card,\” said Joan Leach, director of the school district\’s library services. Maude Logan and VanZandt- Guinn elementary schools were runners-up in the competition, with 84 percent and 82 percent, respectively.\”
