Willamina council puts library cat on reserve

Redcardlibrarian writes “Agatha Christie can stay, but Othello and Hamlet have to go.

The Willamina City Council voted Thursday night to allow the city’s library cat, nicknamed Agie, to remain at the library until she dies.

However, two hamsters that also live at the library, Othello and Hamlet, need to find new homes.

The council voted in early December to ban animals from its public buildings, except for animals used by people with disabilities. Several councilors said that the decision came after they had heard complaints from patrons who were concerned about animals living at the library, including worries about allergic reactions.

At its Thursday night meeting, the council heard from about 60 area residents who supported letting Agie stay. Library staff members presented 251 new signatures on a petition asking to keep the cat — adding to about 200 signatures they already had collected.
