Thieving Woman Wants Library To Answer To Obscenity Charge

JoAn Karkos will probably tell you that her crime is not as bad as the library’s. She allegedly stole a copy of It’s Perfectly Normal from the shelves of the Lewiston Public Library because she wants to raise awareness. As if theft isn’t bad enough, she also wants the library to answer to her charge that the book violates the city’s obscenity ordinance and thus, the library is at fault here and she is merely a shining avenger of morality and justice.

“No. 1, I want awareness,” Karkos said in a phone interview. “People are simply not aware of what this book means. And when they find out, they don’t want it to exist at all and they certainly don’t want it in their libraries and their schools.”
