Former Vermont librarian wins James Patterson’s PageTurner Award

A former longtime Vermont librarian has won a $10,000 award for her work in providing books to African villages.

Pam Shelton was the head librarian at Shelburne Village School from 1974 to 1997, when she retired and moved to a small village in northern Botswana after visiting Africa several times. She made it her mission to create much-needed libraries in schools throughout the country with donated books.

Since then her Botswana Book Project has distributed more than 300,000 books and led to the creation of 300 libraries.
