Carnegie library goes retail

While many libraries are borrowing marketing techniques from chain bookstores such as Barnes and Noble, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has decided to directly compete with the chains. Besides the requisite coffee shop and comfy chairs, Carnegie plans on selling music and fiction, in a bid to keep patrons, particularly teens, using the library. The Board presented the proposal to City Council last week, and plans on beginning construction in the fall.

The Library has lost over $2.5 million in state funding in the past year, and plans on cutting hours to make up for the shortfall. More here.
