From Shelf-Awareness a report on author James Patterson’s address to conference participants:
“Amazon seems out to control shopping in this country. This ultimately will have an effect on every grocery and department store chain and every big box store and ultimately put thousands of mom and pop stores out of business. It sounds like a monopoly to me. Amazon also wants to control bookselling, the book business and book publishing. That’s a national tragedy. If this is the new American way, it has to be changed by law if necessary.”
it has to be changed by law if necessary
Patterson — Amazon also wants to control bookselling, the book business and book publishing. That’s a national tragedy. If this is the new American way, it has to be changed by law if necessary.
So how would this law read?
Options
Are you a writer that has created a wonderful book and Amazon is oppressing you and keeping you from getting your book printed? That is a shame because there are no alternatives to Amazon for book creation.* There are also no online bookstore alternatives to Amazon.** Because of this crisis situation a law needs to be passed to address this situation.*** The situation is similar to the censorship of the former USSR. Maybe we can produce Samizdat to spread the word of the Amazon oppression.
* Except for Lulu or Blurb or Book1One or Wavecloud
** Except for Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, Powells, and alibris.
*** Don’t worry about violating the 1st Amendment.

Considering how well his books sell you’d think he’d be a bit more informed about the market.
