From The Gambia Daily Observer…information about the new American Corner in the National Library of The Gambia in Banjul. The U.S. Ambassador to the Gambia, Joseph D. Stafford, talks about how “American Corners”, complete with books, videos, CDs and e-mail penpal access, can inform young people from the Gambia about how life is lived by young Americans. Ambassador Stafford further emphasised that the aim of the corner is to bring the true story of the United States to people and foreign countries, to promote understanding of their culture, values and history. He added that the United States of America and The Gambia share many values, especially in the area of commitment to freedom, democracy and human dignity.
I guess he wants to keep his job…
I guess he wants to keep his job…
That was a rude comment. To impugn the motives of a decorated career Foreign Service Officer is childish. The program was developed by the State Department and its implementation falls to the various Embassies. That an Ambassador would carry out the instructions of the Department is to be expected.
Perhaps you feel somehow superior to a polyglot career diplomat who has been posted to Tehran, Tunis and Kuwait among others.
I think the information corners project is a brilliant programme that will allow us to show others how our government, the freest democracy in the world, operates. We may not have the best system ever, but it is far superior to any other.
N.B the short name for The Republic of The Gambia is The Gambia not simply Gambia.
in other words…
the aim of the corner is to bring the true story of the United States to people and foreign countries, to promote understanding of their culture, values and history.
More Americanisation.
