History buff spots stolen document

Thanks to a sharp-eyed Reno history sleuth, a valuable Utah document with connections to famed outlaw Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch has been returned to its rightful place in Salt Lake City.

Rich Johnston, a state photographer employed by the Nevada Department of Transportation in Carson City, said a two-page letter offered for sale in an online auction last spring caught his attention.

“People steal for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s just because they’re greedy, other times it’s because they want to cover up something,” Rocha said. “Unfortunately, archivists can’t always provide protection.”
