Libraries fight economic woes with information

I've been seeing This Message more and more lately: "When the economy drops, people use libraries more," said State Librarian Annie Norman. She then offered this quote from Anne Herbert, in "The Whole Earth Catalog": "Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries."

time of no money....

"Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries" ? really? from "The Whole Earth Cataloge"? Citation please...

'cause I think it's from "Freewheeling Frank" of the FFFB graphix and the substitute for libraries was "dope".

Yes? No?

Lots of references to the quote online

but only Wikipedia gave a citation:

# ^ attribution to "The Next Whole Earth Catalog", (1980), p 331. Derived from the Gilbert Shelton quote, "Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope."[1]

The Yale Book of Quotations

The Yale Book of Quotations says yes, it's in the catalog, and source was FFFB

There was a library

There was a library awareness campaign (California? / LA?) that was similar....but I can't find that it was ever a S. Brand / WEC item.

libraries = dope = funny

I love that someone didn't know the original quote and now "libraries" is a synonym for "dope." Drug humor is funny.
