Is Wikipedia the next Google?

A link I found off of DailyKos asks the subject question. From the blog article:

They (or maybe that's we) are the emerging king disruptor; the one entity that we will soon fear most, if not already...Like its predecessors, Wikipedia is powerful because it provides access to largely accurate information that can be hard to find. This king, however, is unlike any other because it operates in a completely democratic way.

I think this gets back to the discussion from awhile ago about whether there is a need for authority. I found it interesting food for thought. As the Kos says, "Chew it up. Spit it out." Cheerio! --D

Jury is still out

Hi Durst,Just wanted to say that you post interesting items whether I respond to them or not.I think it's too early to say whether Wikipedia could be the next Google. It does have a high convenience factor and in some fields (pop culture & IT) I think information is better than you can get from a print encyclopedia. It depends on whether Wikipedia builds trust. If you start having people get burned by information in Wikipedia, it won't be the next Google.Take care and keep writing!

Google vs Wikipedia

Since Google only indexes existing information, I think Wikipedia has a long way to go in building a strong following. I also think Wikipedia has many detractors that worry about the lack of editors or authority control. As a result, it will never be the ONLY source used for a single purpose.
