Online retailer Amazon has come under fire for letting any old person pose as an author and submit a comment about a book they haven't written. The Register has some examples of reviewers gone wild.
What I know is that, when one of my books was coming out (prob. First Have Something to Say, could have been Being Analog), inaccurate information appeared at Amazon. I wrote a "from the author" note explaining the situation. It never appeared. I tried again. Same result. The inaccurate information continued to appear for months. (There was no attempt to confirm whether I was, in fact, the author. The posts were simply trashcanned without response.)
Maybe if I'd asked someone else to pose as me and write the "from the author" it would have made it onto the site?
