The Greenville County Library Board has voted to make it more difficult for children to access sexually explicit material on the Internet, but it stopped short of installing filters.
Story HereThe board on Monday night unanimously voted to adopt a policy requiring parents to accompany children under age 12 who want to use the Internet on the library system\’s computers. Parents also would have to sign permission forms for children ages 12 to 17.
The new policy also requires library staff members to be more active in monitoring Internet use.
At Monday\’s meeting attended by about 50 people, the eight-member board rejected member Michael Green\’s proposal to install filters.
The new policy will be reviewed by the county\’s lawyers in 10 days and will be put into effect two weeks later.
\”It\’s just common sense to let the parent be the filter,\” said board member David Suddeth, who proposed the stricter guidelines.
