The Value of Libraries

The Value of Libraries is a nice Commentary By Tracie Lammers, a Reference Librarian at the Gray Public Library. She writes: “ When it comes to the development of a community and determining whether it is viable, a vibrant public library is one of the main attractions for new companies and new employees. Libraries are part of the economic development package presented as part of the “quality of life” of a community. A public library is definitely part of the “essential services” that a city provides, both educationally and economically.“

    Libraries not as important as other services
    We all know that libraries are essential to the community, yet funding to libraries in many communities are being cut. Being cut first before other services. Or being cut more than other services. Therefore, those in government don’t see libraries as important as other services. Then the question is, why? If we are so certain of the importance of libraries to communities, then surely the politicians must know also. So why do the politicians cut funding to libraries, let alone increase funding? It must be simply because libraries cannot convey this message to those that hold the purse strings or the methodologies that we use in libraries are (or perceived to be) foreign and outdated that they don’t see it worth funding.
