Blogs and the NYT scandal

This is an audio archive of an NPR story from Sunday’s Weekend Edition about how blogging kept the New York Times plagiarism issue alive. Apparently, many current and former reporters flooded a journalism blog with their stories about expectations and conditions at the NYT, forcing a shake-up at the highest levels.

There is also some general coverage about the phenomenon of blogging, and how it has circumvented and/or enhanced traditional media coverage of several events. What wasn’t discussed, and what I’ve had questions about, is the veracity of blogging in general, and legal aspects about posting unsigned, unverified sources. Maybe Jessamyn, Steven, Blake and others could point us to some sources….(You’ll need Real Audio or some other player to listen to this piece.)

Speaking of the misuse of blogs…I’d like to take this opportunity to give a thumbs up to NYT reporter Rick Bragg who resigned, upon being suspended for two weeks, after his use of stringers was called into question. He’s a no nonsense kinda guy and is getting on with his life without bellyaching to the media. Plus, he can write like a mofo.
