The foundation has hired Patrick Clarke, the man who coordinated the creation of Woodrow Wilson’s presidential library in Virginia, to oversee the project.”
Phew!
For a second there, all I could think of was Pat Buchanan. Yeesh!
Re:Phew!
I really thought the same thing, I thought it would be like a campaign library or something.
That being said I think I’ve read in a couple places he is often considered to be one of the worst presidents ever, but I guess every president should have some kind of tribute, except maybe William Henry Harrison, he was around for what, a month?
Re:Phew!
For those of you scoring at home, Buchanan was the President who preceded Lincoln, which probably is a big clue why he’s reputed to be the worst President. I’d have to agree – the country fell apart under his watch, which isn’t a very good legacy. His poilcies caused an economic collapse, and his ineptitude fanned the flames of secession.
On a more personal note, he was the only bachelor President, and as you might guess, he’s rumored to have been gay.
Add this up, and I’d say he’s much more interesting historically than Gerald Ford. I don’t think Presidential libraries are tributes for good presidents, they are a way to keep track of our history. We certainly need to remember James Buchanan just as much as we revere Abe.
