Selling self / Buying local / Buying nothing

Another round of resumes sallies forth this week. The academic job postings have slowed down around here, but the PL postings are up. Thanks to the mighty red pen of my good friend lislemck, my resume has shed about 700 characters of ugly fat, and my cover letters got some stylin' new threads. So I'm feeling a little better about my prospects than I did last month. Optimism does not come easy for me, but I am giving it a try.

This Saturday, November 19, is America Unchained! and Canada Unchained! -- a project of American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA). The idea is to shop and do business exclusively with locally owned, independent businesses for one day. On top of its own merits, Unchained! might serve as a sort of warm-up for those of us planning on observing Buy Nothing Day on November 25.

An interesting aside: The current issue of Utne Reader includes an article about a family in the Pacific Northwest's effort to eat only food that was produced within 100 miles of their home.
