A Wired Blog Post says Of all the things you'd expect to have gone mobile by now, the humble book still lags behind news, magazines, music and video. If digital takeup is any guide to health, literature is the sick man of media.
The why of that has many faces, but DRM plays its part.

Problem of Definition
If you define "book" as a distinct piece of work delivered online, they're a rip-roaring success.
If you define "book" as a product that "e-book" vendors think they're going to shove down our unwilling throats full of proprietary paraphernalia and available to play only on devices of their choosing, then naturally you're going to have problems.
I see no reason to associate "book" with option b.
