It’s Just Embarrassing When Men Read Twilight

Adults Should Read Adult Books
The only thing more embarrassing than catching a guy on the plane looking at pornography on his computer is seeing a guy on the plane reading “The Hunger Games.” Or a Twilight book. Or Harry Potter. The only time I’m O.K. with an adult holding a children’s book is if he’s moving his mouth as he reads.

    There’s quite a lot I could say in response to this, but I think C.S. Lewis has already said it better than I ever could:
    “Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

    Typical Stein writing
    Joel Stein seems to think that tossing out essays with stupid ideas that irritate people is a good way to start a discussion or make a point. He also clearly thinks he is funny and loves any kind of attention. (I guess being thought an idiot is better than being ignored?) Honestly, he’s a large part of the reason I quit reading Time: as he wrote more for the magazine, it was too much trouble to try to ignore his “contributions.”
