Google News Alerts are sent by email when news articles appear online that match the topics you specify.
Some handy uses of Google News Alerts include:
- monitoring a developing news story
- keeping current on a competitor or industry
- getting the latest on a celebrity or event
- keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams.
Getting set up with this is quite simple. One must simply enter their query, select how often they would like to be updated (daily or as it happens), then enter their email address.
Is this cool, or what?
I’d call it “or what”
Email shouldn’t be used for this sort of service anymore. We’ve got RSS and Aggregators now. SMS if you’ve got a mobile phone. Email alerts are sooo 5 years ago.
If I want to keep up with a story, I’ll visit AP wire sites or set up a web aggregator (like newsisfree.com) or macreporter if I’m at home.
Re:I’d call it “or what” 😉
Looks like we’ve got another RSS bigot here.
While I may use my aggregator daily, I don’t necessarlity want all of the information I use to nne presented to me in that way. I could see using GNA for things that I wasn’t interested in on a daily basis.
Also, I bet that there’s a greater deal of flexibiity and specificty that would come with using GNA. Could you set up an RSS feed on an AP wire site for the terms “belle sebastian”?
Re:I’d call it “or what”
I don’t know, I kind of like surfing sites and getting surprised instead of being very deliberate about specific searches. But I guess that’s just me. Like I’d go to Pitchfork’s website instead of GNA.
Dear god, B&S are putting out a new album? auuughhhhhh. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to listen to Storyteling yet, I was so disappointed by Fold your hands, and the loss of stuart david & isobel, but now I’m totally OT……
Re:I’d call it “or what”
There is an RSS option for these Google news feeds. See http://www.voidstar.com/gnews2rss.php. I opted to grab the code and put it up on my own site, as the author of the code suggested, and it works great.
