Sci-Fi Shocker: Ray Bradbury Wrong On Future Of Electronic Books

Alexander Wolfe Says Science-fiction icon Ray Bradbury, who was quoted the other day as saying that e-books will never succeed because they're "not books," is wrong. They're succeeding already, and they are -- pretty much -- books.

A long time self-declared luddite who is well-known for stories that aren't really science-fiction but often labelled as such and typically have warnings about the evil of technology doesn't think ebooks will take off. Shocker.

I love Ray Bradbury and he is one of my favorite writers, but seriously, it always irks me a bit when people call him a science fiction writer and confuse that with a futurist. I'll grant he's used science-fiction themes and concepts. That is probably enough to call him a science-fiction writer, but his writings don't seem to fall in the same grouping as many of the stories by writers like Clarke, Heinlen, or Asimov.

Here is Ray Bradbury giving a talk at a library:

I find Mr. Wolf's assertions interesting, but unproved. He doesn't really cite any meaningful evidence, so his statement just stands as a bald assertion.

Bradbury is still worth listening to.
