According to a front page note from Jeff Bezos the Kindle is in stock and ships immediately. Prior to this the Kindle has been shipping sporadically. Clearly some were shipping because a slow but steady supply of Kindles were showing on eBay. There is also a link to Amazon's current letter to shareholders included with the front page announcement. And still no sales figures
You know what's amazing about that front-page letter and the linked letter to shareholders?
What's not there.
Sure, there's a warehouse picture that shows what must be at least a couple of hundred Kindles... and we can assume at least 2,000 have been sold, given the 2,000 reviews (assuming nobody writes an Amazon review on the Kindle without owning one: maybe not a safe assumption).
But the device has been out for five months. And there's still no sense of whether actual sales are on the order of 2,500 or 25,000 or 250,000. This is very unusual for a hot new consumer product.
Of course, taking over the front page of a multiproduct store to tout one specific product is also a little unusual...particularly if the product is so hot that it's flying off the warehouse floors.
