As Works Flood In, Nation’s Library Treads Water

Article in the NYT about sequestration and the Library of Congress

Where are they? How can our government allow this to happen?

I know this is almost as big an oversimplification as Birdie's comments, but I'll still say that we need to be honest about priorities.

I love libraries, and I think they are tremendously important. But... More important that paying Social Security benefits so that people can eat? More important than funding FEMA in an effort to get Hurricane Sandy victims back into homes?

OK, let's cut Defense spending and use that money to fund libraries. Except, how much of the savings will go to increased unemployment benefits for the people who lose manufacturing jobs from those defense contractors?

Librarians are mostly public employees, so we know how government budgets work. It's never simple, and it's rarely pretty.
