Supermarket Censorship

A supermarket refused to make a cake for a child's birthday. The child, Adolph Hitler Campbell is not getting a cake from Shop-Rite this year.

This blatant act of censorship has upset the family, according to the LehighValleyLive.com website.

Unfortunately this is not from the Onion, and pictures of the child's birth registration as well as that of his unusually named siblings are attached to the article.

Was it a...

white sheet cake?

Supermarket Censorship

This is not "censorship" - the parents are free to go to another bakery or grocery store and try to get the cake made there, or do it themselves. This story has NOTHING to do with libraries - what was the point of including it in LIS News? Thanks for jumping on the bandwagon and giving these mental midgets the attention they were looking for.

In the article the mother

In the article the mother says "ShopRite can't even make a cake for a 3-year-old," said Deborah Campbell, 25, who is Heath's wife of three years and the mother of the children. "That's sad."

No, what is sad is when you name your child after a mass murderer.

i hate creepy racists

naming your kid adolph hitler...or giving the daughter the middle name "aryan nation" just disgusts me to no end.

Worst parental naming ever?

Worst parental naming ever?

Supermarket Censorship

The supermarket is a privately owned business, they have every right to refuse business... Do take note, that the market offered to make a cake big enough so that the (screw-loose) parents could write the child's name on the cake with store bought squeeze tube frosting!

As for the parents, aren't they lucky they live here instead of say....Italy or France where there might have been more to say by the community. I wonder where these people come from, and maybe if they'd like a one-way ticket to a communist country? Do you think they'd survive?

Your rights

The law (1st Amendment to the US Constitution) only protects you from censorship by the government. I doubt this is actually censorship though. They simply refused to provide a service. If anything this is discrimination based on an offensive name and the law only protects you from discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, familial/marital status and prior arrest/conviction record.

Discrimination

The law only protects members of a protected class from discrimination. Not all of those things you mentioned make one a member of a protected class.

Protected classes in Federal law can include:
Race/ Ethnicity/Color (different Acts use different terms)
Religion/sect
National Origin
Age (over 40 for employment purposes ADEA 1967)
Family status for housing (exceptions for over 55 only restrictions)
Disability status
Veterans status

Absent from that list are sexual orientation and arrest/ conviction record as there are not protections aginst discrimination based upon membership in these classes in all jurisdictions.

dangerous

You know if either of those cousin-spawn go missing in a mall or supermarket they are screeeeeewwwwed.

Censorship

All long as is it not state sponsored censorship I have no problem with it. Private stores censoring cakes is ok with me.
