Controversial pay rise for Australian librarians


Although dated in 2002, this article from The Age, an Australian newspaper, outlines the reasons for the decision to grant librarians in News South Wales a pay increase. The decision was extremely controversial and has not yet spread to other states in Australia.

This is an interesting article, and I hope more people check it out. I especially liked the fact that they compared librarians' salaries with geologists in their attempt to find a balance. That seems like a fair comparison to me. I also enjoyed the "work-value principles" they used in addition to a raw comparison.

I wish the unions good luck in applying this victory to other professions, and I hope that someday gender pay equity will make it to the U.S....
