History meets high tech in Maps

Silicon Valley has an interesting STORY on the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative an ambitious, decentralized project to map all manner of cultural and historical data from around the globe.GIS, the technology fueling the project, works by linking information stored in a computer
database to points on a map. Other data related to time -- the spread of disease, trade
routes, the movement of armies -- can be linked to the same points and overlaid on top
of the geographical locations, giving a captivating, dynamic picture of historical change.
