Stephen King bypasses publisher for online

ZDNet story:

Horror author Stephen King says he and his readers could become \"Big Publishing\'s worst nightmare\" and help \"midlist writers\" by downloading a new novel from his Web site at a cost of $1 an installment.

A further excerpt from the ZDNet-featured article (written by Grant McCool, Reuters):

King wrote in a message on his Web site, that starting on Monday readers will be able to download the opening installment of \"The Plant,\" the first time a significant release has bypassed a publisher.

\"Buck an episode. When Installment One appears, send me the payment -- we\'ll give you all the how-tos then,\" King wrote in the message posted on July 11.

No word on whether King plans to charge for rides in Christine or weekends with Cujo.
