C|net is running a story with some complaints about the Google cache feature. A New York Times spokeswoman talks about the "problem" of Google's (free) caches of articles in the NYT restricted archives.Despite its popularity, Google does have a few detractors. But since technological solutions already exist to prohibit unwanted caching, like in the "illegal" linking cases, this seems to be a misguided criticism. And it shouldn't be surprising that freely-available material on the Internet can get archived, just as libraries have the right to ignore requests to destroy purchased publications (with the exception of some licensed materials and government documents).
