Finally Off the Library Market

Sixteen job applications, five first-round interviews, three second-round interviews, and seven (or so) months after finishing my master's in library science, Maura A. Smale landed a great position at an academic library in New York City. She says it's a pleasure (and a relief) to be writing from the tenure track.

why there is no librarian jobs

1. because librarians don't retire; in most careers, people tend to retire. but, I've seen sooooooo many librarians over the age of 70 still working, even when they can collect pension and work as a substitute or part-time. why?????? in a society where there are lack of jobs, socially responsible behavior is to retire. i know being active is important at old age and i plan to be when i get there. but, older generation needs to give younger people jobs. of course, if you have no pension, that is different. but, most people i know of do and seem unwilling to retire.

2. it seems that most librarians who don't retire have nothing better to do than work. don't they have 'other lives' than librarianship? are most librarians so boring that they have no other desires and wishes than to work in a library? develop some more interesting hobbies, man!
