How can Laura Bush be the wife of George and a librarian?
Are there guidelines for acceptable librarian spouses, all bound in fine leather and indexed, with emphasis on politics, religious beliefs, personal habits, dietary preferences, favorite color.......?
Has that been my problem? I have not matched an appropriate profile?
I figured I was missing something....

It always amazes me that a professionals that defend freedom of thought and freedom of speech will draw the line at political thought they disagree with. I've been called a facist by a SLIS professor because I did not view Cuba to be the Utopia he portrayed. I've been called a murderer by fellow SLIS students because my daughter serves in the military. [LARGE SIGH]
Yes, I would say there are guidelines for being a librarian.--the LBR, the FTR statement.
My father is a WW2 veteran; My husband is a Vietnam war veteran, and I have viewed their service as defending civil liberties, so that was wrong about your daughter.
....and it was wrong for your professor to lower himself to name calling. [Period]
However, the original post implies that Laura Bush is somehow less of a librarian because of her husband's politics -- the guidelines under discussion were for librarian *spouses*, or spouses of librarians, or those whom they choose to marry or cohabit with....whatever.
And nowhere is it written that librarians & their spouses [never mind their children, friends and other family members] are only allowed to hold "approved" beliefs, or explore "approved" career fields, or even be generally "approved of" by others in the library profession.
I'm a REAL librarian -- just like Laura! -- and our professional credentials & abilities are completely independent of our personal political, social and/or religious beliefs -- or those of our respective husbands.
If only that were true, if all librarians could have a wall between their personal beliefs and their professional practice. Unfortunately I find that to not be the case.
