The Crookston (MN) Times reports on a program that helps recycle textbooks that will not be reused in Minnesota schools; the ones in the best condition go to a program based in St. Paul called Books for Africa.
"You hate to throw them out," said Ione Swenson, curriculum/staff development/assessment coordinator for the district. "We'd much rather see them put to good use." Swenson said the district plans to keep donating to the program as other curriculums are replaced. She noted that the organization collects many other materials, such as old laptops, PCs, school supplies, reading books and National Geographic magazines, to distribute in Africa.
