The meaning of life, the universe and everything.

OK here are some ramblings that really have nothing to do with anything in particular and are only related to libraries because I am a librarian and because she of the immeasurable patience works in one.

Jesus would want him fired? I live near Largo, Florida and the City Manager is going to undergo a sex change operation. Personally I think that is unusual and I thank God that I don't feel that I've been born in the wrong body. Is it wrong? well I can't say that it is. However the Pastor (L. stupid arse) of Lighthouse Baptist Church of Largo said:

"Mr. Stanton is not a role model. He's proven that. I think for the sake of our young people today, you need to do what's right, and that's terminate him. ... If Jesus was here tonight, I can guarantee you he'd want him terminated. Make no mistake about it."

I am not the best Catholic on the face of the Earth, but I don't think Jesus wants anyone fired. The City Manager is not going to sue the city. It is nice to see someone who has some class once in a while. Too bad I don't have a job that pays $140K but I'm sure that he will find something.

Does being a City Manager require a penis? It is his penis if he wants to cut it off (along with his scrotum and testes) it should be OK.

I worked with someone who was going through a sex change. I knew it was not a 'traditional' woman when she came to work wearing a brown skirt, cream coloured blouse, brown jacket, appropriate hosiery and brown shoes but carrying a purple and black purse. Hell, even I know a purple and black purse does not go with brown. We worked at IBM together. She said she had known since she was a kid she was to be a girl but had been born in the wrong body. I have no idea what is behind that. She finally quit (oddly just days after vesting :>) because she was tired of being given a hard time by almost everyone about which restroom she used.

I was the on-call manager for weekends one day and I had to go into the office. She was there as well and we happened to have to use the loo at the same time. Apparently the women were freaked out by her using their bog, so as we both walked to the gent's she said do you mind if I use the men's room. I replied that as long as she didn't p**s on me I don't care if she uses the next cube. It amazes me why some people need to get so involved in other people's business. The whole -let he who is without sin cast the first stone - thing requires that I just shut the hell up and MYOB.

OK next pointless point. I bought a new stethoscope today, well I ordered it. It should arrive soon. A < a href=http://www.littmannstethoscopes.com/info/mastercardio.htm>Littmann Master Cardiology ; navy blue of course. This is a bit of a present to myself. I am very pleased that I am a nurse, but sometimes I wonder why I ever did that. I was named in a medical malpractice case a few weeks ago, for a patient I can't even remember. I carry professional liability insurance so I called them and faxed the summons and complaint into them. They took care of it (it turns out I was added in error because my initials are M.D. they thought I was one of the physicians. [see why I don't practice law in the US]) so I have been dismissed from the action. However it was a bit of an annoying week while I waited to find out why I was being sued. So I doubt I'll ever practice as a nurse again in the US. Sure I'll save your ass if you get in a car accident or< a href=http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/50484202.html?dids=50484202:50484202&FMT=FT&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=Jun+29%2C+1989&author=SUE+CARLTON&pub=St.+Petersburg+Times&edition=&startpage=1.B&desc=Lightning+strikes+bicyclist> hit by lightning, but as a career, nope not again. I will keep my license mostly so I can go on trips to other countries, but I am so tired of charting for the lawyers.

That about sums up my week, except I did get in OPS (other people's stuff) to help an old guy with a broken down car on a busy 8-lane road in Clearwater. It was so broken he couldn't get it in neutral to push it. I called the cops to send someone and directed traffic until they (never) came. He has AAA and the tow truck got him out of the road. Most everyone was helpful and let other drivers in; the only people who were idiots and almost killed me were those on the phone. STFU and drive. No one can tell me that holding a phone to your head or even having a call with a headset does not distract a driver. Why is this legal? (Keep this part to yourself; she of the ultimate patience is not thrilled with my frequent involvement in OPS. She wants me to stay out of other people's problems. Unfortunately that's not me.)

So that is my week, oddly a not unusual week for me.

Largo

You are just right.

serious questions

I don't know about firing someone but I will question the sanity of someone who wants to remove healthy body parts. When a teenage girl cuts herself or someone attempts suicide we get them psychological help. It shouldn't be any different for someone who wants their penis removed.

Re:serious questions

From what I understand psychological counseling is an important part, and an integral step in the process. It comes long before the hormone pills.

Do I think it is strange, you bet your life. Am I happy I don't feel a need to hack off my wang? Yes indeed. But you know I just can't speak for others who find themselves thus situated. They guy was a good city manager and I'm not sure that it matters if he wears a dress or has a dick, the city manager in my city is not required to use his penis for any work related functions.... as far as I know.

N.B. I question the sanity of most everyone. I have yet to find anyone who passes the test.

Re:serious questions

Yes but the psychological counseling is based on the premise that cutting off healthy body parts can be a healthy decision. That's like saying if a woman gets couseling she can continue to throw up after eating, she's not anorexic, she's mentally healthy.

the difference

If you continue to starve yourself you'll stroke out, or your body will start to digest your organs and you'll die.If you have your genitals re-assigned then you'll be a different sex, physically that is.The decision to change sexes is unusual but CAN be mentally healthy because there is no physical harm that will come from it. The same cannot be said for an eating disorder.Plus people who have had successful gender reassignment are usually happier than they were before. Anorexics are miserable until the get better or die.The better question to ask would be why do you think it's unhealthy?

Re:the difference

I think it is unhealthy. Heck any medically unnecessary surgery is unhealthy. However one has to weigh the physical health risks against the mental health benefits. If it keeps someone from blowing their brains out because they feel they were born with the wrong parts, then well, I guess it meets the risks:benefits test.

Re:the difference

"If you have your genitals re-assigned then you'll be a different sex, physically that is."

I'm sorry but that is simply not true. A man who has his penis removed is still a man, he can't get pregnant, he won't have periods, he won't hit menopause. And unless medicine has jumped ahead by light years all women get is a limp piece of penile looking flesh attached. An erection consists of inserting an object to make the attachment stiff. No amount of drugs or medical procedures can turn a man into a woman or vice versa. Not facing this reality until after the fact makes the procedure mentally unhealthy.

Re:the difference

So everyone woman who has hit menopause is a man? Can I send mom a present on Father's Day or do I still have to observe Mother's Day?If it's purely plumbing, how about those women who have had hysterecomies? Is my aunt 2/5 woman? She's pretty tough.I don't know anything about "limp piece[s] of penile looking flesh." That's all you, dude.As it happens the American Psychological Association (http://www.apa.org/topics/transgender.html) recognizes that one's sexual identity is influenced by biological, social, emotional and physical factors. In other words, people who know WAY more than we do about it, believe it's not as simple, for some people, as you make it sound.

Re:the difference

Certainly having a sex change does not alter the genotype, but the phenotype. So she will still have all those pesky Y chromosomes floating around.

Re:the difference

Somewhere in the past I blogged about a sex-change guy-->girl who developed all the stereotypes about women and science after the change. I'd heard him on NPR. Very interesting interview. Also quite believable. About that outfit she was wearing. The clue should have been not the purse, but that she wasn't dressed in sweats and athletic shoes, or in tight jeans with a muffin top belly.

I doubt that Jesus is the least bit worried any sexual parts except those going where he's specifically prohibited. I'm sure that obscure preacher got a lot of press. There are many babies born with ambiguous sexual organs, and they are "assigned" a gender by well meaning parents, "experts," and doctors. Mistakes are made. But I haven't seen this as a reason for a late term abortion, like poverty or Down's or a woman's right to last minute choices, so it must not be a condition considered too incompatible with life as we know it.

Sex and religion and law suits. You know how to draw the comments on a library site.

"I don't know anything about "limp piece[s] of penile looking flesh." That's all you, dude."

I've seen a short documentary on a woman who had the surgery.

"As it happens the American Psychological Association (http://www.apa.org/topics/transgender.html) recognizes that one's sexual identity is influenced by biological, social, emotional and physical factors.

In other words, people who know WAY more than we do about it, believe it's not as simple, for some people, as you make it sound."

Yes and people who know way more about it than we do have refused to do the surgery.

Re:serious questions

. . . but I will question the sanity of someone who wants to remove healthy body parts.

Sex is who you are on the outside, a matter of plumbing. Gender is who you are on the inside, a matter of psycho-sexual dynamics. Trouble arises when the two do not match up, and it is not a healthy situation. Surgical correction is called for in such cases. You don't have to understand it. You don't have go through with it. You just have to stay out of the lives of those who do have to go through with it.
