Great essay
Thanks for that!
I was chatting the other day with a woman who works in a small franchise operation where I was shopping--very up-scale, very posh-posh, full of bling-bling and luscious calories. She was breathless with excitement that she might get in at the local Wal-Mart.
your aside
You say the choice is either (1) organic food or (2) genetically modified food... Actually there is a lot of fruit and vegetables that are neither organically grown nor genetically modified. They are just grown using pesticides.

Well yes and no. But to answer your point, I didn't mean to infer that organic's and gmo's are the only two varieties available. I chose organics specifically because of their clientele.
As for pesticides, it's not really a question of "Do they?", but rather, "How much?". Many organics still use pesticides and herbicides. Transgenic crops do as well, but in much lower quantities because they have a tolerance to pesticides, herbicides, diseases and pests. Make sense?
