Library School Blues

Am about to finish my first class in "library school" and I am feeling a bit out of sorts ... I honestly did not learn that much from this intro class, except for the fact that I may be downsized out of a job that I can't even get yet.
I have been working in libraries for going on 6 years now, and I love what I do. But have to admit that so far, the MLS is not what I thought it would be. I know, I know, give it a chance, well I am, I will continue on with the best of intentions.
What's that you say??
Oh yes, I know about the road to hell...

Re:Give it a couple more classes

I'm with Sam. The best thing I got out of my intro classes were good friends, some of whom I enjoy bumping into a conference every once in awhile. I almost rather would have had those theory classes at the end. I think they would have meant more to me, or enabled me to put the theory into context. Oh, well. Hang in there!

Give it a couple more classes

I personally found the intro classes in library school to be completely worthless, and I went to a "top" school. Maybe try out another class or two and see how it goes. Good luck!

Intro Schmintro

Don't read much into the intro class. I would not say we've chosen a wonderful career, but don't judge it from what you saw in one class.

Library intro

I don't know if your classes are graduate level. I took the 4 intro classes required of every beginning MLS student. But an exam was also required after taking them. I got A's in the classes, but flunked the tests, which had nothing at all to do with the course work. The only thing I could figure out was that the classes had evolved to meet the demands of the times, but the tests had stayed the same over the decades. Fortunately, it wasn't necessary to pass them.

I've met very few people who liked their course work. One woman I know dropped out after 2 weeks--she couldn't stand it, even though she'd told me upon entering that it was God's direction. Poor communication I suppose. She received a message intended for someone else? But I liked them.
