Republican Politics

THINGS YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE TO BE A REPUBLICAN TODAY:

Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's cocaine conviction is none of our business.

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness, and you need our prayers for your recovery.

You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt.

What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

Feel free to pass this on.

If you don't send it to at least 10 other people, we're likely to be stuck with Bush for 4 more years.

Friends don't let friends vote Republican.

Simply not true

In an effort to be more inclusive and to not start a partisan battle I will be brief and not reply to each point of your posting.

I know as a registered Republican that what you wrote is not true, it is simply partisan rhetoric. However Fang, as you are neither a Republican nor a Democrat as you are Canadian. You will not be stuck with any US President because you are not involved in the choice in any way.

Thank you for your insight into what a Canadian believes about our country, however inconsequential it may be.

Re:Simply not true

I know as a registered Republican that what you wrote is not true [...]

It is every bit as true as Republican anti-Democratic rhetoric. The only defensible statement anyone can make about what I posted is that most of the statements are egregiously oversimplified. All of them are accurate, however, within context.

You will not be stuck with any US President because you are not involved in the choice in any way.

Tell that to the 11 to 15 thousand dead Iraqi civilians who also did not vote in the 2000 Presidential election. Tell it to the dead civilians of Afghanistan. Tell it to the disappeared of Chile and Argentina. Tell it to our softwood lumber industry and our residents near the border who are choking to death on American pollution.

And by the way, mdoneil, you have to learn how to compartmentalize. I hate George Bush, not Americans; I hate your government (mine too), not your political system; I hate your foreign policy and the contempt in which your Republican Party holds those who are "Not One Of Us", not your country. Your inability to understand these things will obstruct your way forward if you don't correct it.

Re:Simply not true

How thoughtful of you to point out what you feel are my flaws. When I vote in Canada I'll certainly take them into account.

I'm sorry you can't find a government you like.

I'd post a substantive response, but I have found that reasoned discussion is not wanted here. Either someone points out why I am 'wrong' or moderates conservative or Republican comments as overrated or flamebait. If Rory Litwin thought LISNews has taken a right turn I wonder what it was like a few years ago.

So since dialogue has taken a back seat to vitriol I am going to go pray for the country in which I live that we may have an election that brings us the better candidate and the best possible result.Towards that end I am also going to vote for Bush. I think that is what is best for the country and I am morally bound to do what I think is best for all mankind.

Dude Re:Simply not true

While poking the bear (Fang) is fun as far as it goes taking him seriously is bad judgement. There are plenty of reasonable liberals on LISNews, they are usually as wrong but they are not nearly as caustic.

Re:Dude Re:Simply not true

Careful Greg.

Remember, Fang is an anarchist. Completely apolitical if I remember his testimonial correctly. Unfortunately this disdain for all things political stops north of the border. That or knee-jerk reactionaries don't like cold weather

Re:Dude Re:Simply not true

I'll take this to mean that you couldn't refute anything I'd said and you felt that you had to throw a hissy fit instead.

Plus, I'm glad to see that you think are plenty are reasonable liburlz on LISNews, because I can think of only one or two reasonable conservatives.

Re:Dude Re:Simply not true

No hissy fit, just helping mdoneil to keep things in perspective.
