Pimp my cart carries controversy

Some people praised the contest, dubbed "Pimp My Cart!," as a fresh way to reach kids and give flash to the decidedly undecorated carts that move books around the library. Others abhor the casual use of pimp, even if the verb form of the word now can mean to make something look sharp and new.

"To use that terminology," said Kit McNally, who runs a Milwaukee program that works with former prostitutes, "shows a woeful ignorance of the disastrous effect pimping has on women and girls."

Grip please

"To use that terminology," said Kit McNally, who runs a Milwaukee program that works with former prostitutes, "shows a woeful ignorance of the disastrous effect pimping has on women and girls."No it demonstrates that Kit McNally is overly pious. Maybe the library can show greater sensitivity to her by changing the name to "Whore Makeover for the Cart".I applaud her for the work she does but I am so sick and tired of the perpetually offended. Though it was refreshing not to have to listen about familly values.

Re:Grip please

...because MTV says that the word "pimp" has evolved into something fabulous, we should all forget the images of women being beaten and raped and hooked on drugs and beaten again and killed and cut and cut some more and punched and slapped and kicked in the face and the belly and having their bones broken and their teeth knocked out and their hair pulled out and their lives ruined and their daughters "pimped out" and put into this cycle of abuse that goes on and on and on until these women feel that they can never escape...
So, yeah! Rock on Racine Public Library. You throw some paint on a book cart and make it all better. Thank you. Now I know that pimps are awesome!

Re:Grip please

Pimpin' ain't easy.

ch-ch-ch-changes

Actually, yes. Librarians, and other similar folk, know that the meanings of words are fluid. The first meaning is one that has a lot of meaning to you. But other people are coming to the word later and with no knowledge of what real "pimps" do.And you can't really expect them to.

Re:Grip please

I have rarely been moved to reply to anything on LISNews. But Pimp My Cart? Pimp My Cart?!! How can anyone in their right mind not find that offensive?

Re:Grip please

I'm not willing to submit paperwork to prove it, but I feel that I am of reasonably sound mind. I'm not offended nor do I think any reasonable person should be offended.

Dictionary

I think that a reasonable person could go with the definition in the dictionary for this word. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pimp

There seems to be way more negative than positive with this word.

Re:Dictionary

Re:Dictionary

And the entry at Wikipedia post to shows that the word is largely connected to prostitution and the exploitation of women. Yes, it does have a popular culture dimension but that dimension comes with a lot of baggage.

Niggardly

Is there anyone out there that thinks pimp is ok but niggardly is not?
Some people would think there are others ways to say "miserly" than using "niggardly" and some would think that when you want to say "to dress elegantly" there are better choices than pimp.

Re:Niggardly

Personally I don't have a problem with niggardly. Nor do I have a problem with fucktard.http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fuc k+tardWords hurt best when written on a rock.
