50 libraries face closure as councils balance books in England
Dozens of public libraries are threatened with closure as local councils struggle to balance this year's budgets.
Around 50 libraries in at least six different counties are facing possible closure in the coming months. Most are in small and sometimes isolated communities. The council, which is holding a public consultation before making its final decision, argues that its smallest libraries are under-used and that the money would be better spent extending opening hours at main libraries and improving its mobile service.
