My secret garden

Back in the 80s, I spent almost every lunch hour that it wasn't freezing or raining reading in Bryant Park. There was a guerilla gardiner named Charlie who had planted hollyhocks, cosmos, and sunflowers between the hedges. The drug dealers sat under the trees. I would read the books I borrowed from The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen Library. The secret garden is no more, though Charlie ended up with some kind of employment. But this event sounds much too crowded and noisy to really enjoy reading in the park.
