The San Francisco Chronicle has a nice piece on Luis Herrera the city librarian of San Francisco. Herrera moved into his new office in April, succeeding Susan Hildreth, who left last summer to take the top post -- state librarian -- at the California State Library in Sacramento. Herrera said one of his goals is to make sure library patrons know when their branch will close for renovation, when it will reopen and the location of the nearest open branch and bookmobile. The chain of events that would transform a kid once too scared to cross the threshold of his neighborhood library into City Librarian of San Francisco began when Herrera was a senior at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he held a work-study job processing maps from the U.S. Geological Survey.
