The "Right to Privacy"

There is no constitutional amendment that guarantees U.S. citizens' privacy. A couple of them dance around it, but I can think of no better time for organizations such as the Center for Democracy and Technology to push an agenda that will protect us from governmental and commercial interference in our technology-filled lives.

Yes, no one needs to use GMail, but as this policy paper points out, the sort of technology used to provide the GMail service will undoubtedly move to other free-web based email providers, too.
