27 members of Librarians Without Borders (LWB) are currently on the ground on a service learning trip to Guatemala, from April 22 - May 3, 2011. This is part of a partnership with the Miguel Angel Asturias Academy, a non-profit private school founded in 1994 to eliminate education disparities through subsidized tuition and create informed, critically-thinking, socially conscious citizens through its curriculum. The partnership between LWB and Asturias is focused on promoting literacy and libraries in Guatemala, and development and operation of the Asturias Community Library. As part of this trip, the group will learn about Guatemalan culture and education, participate in community organizing and change making workshops, and complete a week of work at the Asturias Academy and Community Library. Librarians Without Borders is pleased to be sponsored by Auryn, a new and noteworthy company in the children’s iPad book market. Over the course of our fieldwork in Asturias from April 22 – May 3rd, Auryn is donating $1 of each app sold to our organization. Auryn has received significant recognition for their work in the emerging mobile app book space. Their work includes Teddy’s Day (also in german), Teddy’s Night (also in german), The Little Mermaid, Bunny Fun: Head Shoulder’s Knees and Toes by Rosemary Wells, and more. Visit the links to these titles to reach the iTunes store and any purchase will help support the work of LWB during this promotional period! LWB first visited the Asturias Academy in 2010 when 11 LWB members from McGill University traveled to Guatemala, with an aim to develop an action plan for implementation of the library into the school. This year's trip is focused on outreach to the community, as Asturias is ultimately hoping to extend library access to community members and Asturias alumni, in addition to students. By creating a community library in Xela to serve students, their families and members of the community, the Asturias Academy hopes to foster a love of reading and promote education.
