Learn More about this program below….Please note! This is not an attempt to unload unwanted goods! The titles we will be distributing are currently being sold to bookstores, libraries and schools nationwide. This project is part of our national outreach effort. We have already implemented a similar program in 1800 secondary schools that has been met with an overwhelming favorable response.

L.A. Theatre Works is a non-profit organization that has been producing radio drama since 1987. Our award-winning Audio Theatre Collection now includes over 300 classic and contemporary plays – the largest library of audio theatre in the country. We believe in sharing our work and the joy of the creative process to audiences everywhere.

Currently, over 1300 libraries have purchased our audiocassettes for their collection. We realize some libraries are unable to afford to add such work to their collections. With this in mind, we requested a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support an access effort for these libraries. They agreed this was an important project and have given us funds to implement the program.

The Library Access Project

Each participating library receives – at absolutely no cost to them – five audio recordings of plays performed by some of this country\’s most prominent and talented actors. Each tape is packaged in durable, library-ready vinyl cases with colorful, attractive covers. To assist with publicizing the availability of these tapes, we will provide publicity materials including a sample press release and signage. We ask that the participating libraries provide us with feedback on how the tapes were received and used by their constituency, and some basic statistical information about their institution.

Our current funding allows for the distribution of five tapes to 500 libraries. We continue to seek additional funding that will allow us to distribute more titles to each of the libraries that participate in this project.

The selected titles for the initial distribution are:

Anna Christie by Eugene O\’Neill
(AudioFile Earphones Award, Poetry & Drama, 2000)

Park Your Car in Harvard Yard by Israel Horovitz
(Finalist: New York Festivals Award, 1994)

Pretty Fire by Charlayne Woodard
(Recommended Audiobook for Young Adults, Young Adult Library Services Association, 2000; Finalist: Audio Publishers Association Audie Award, 2000)

Present Laughter by Noel Coward

Young Man from Atlanta by Horton Foote
(Pulitzer Prize Winner, 1995)

Our Request

The purpose of this project is to provide these tapes to underserved libraries. There is no specific criteria set as every state defines \”underserved\” differently. We estimate these would be libraries with low material purchasing budgets or per capita expenditures for your state.

If you would like to enroll your library in this outreach program, please go to our website at www.latw.org and submit the enrollment form. It is that easy! Enrolled libraries will recieve tapes in March and April of 2001 along with promotional materials to assist with circulation.

Thank You!

With your help, we can increase access of this unique artistic resource to new audiences nationwide. We greatly appreciate your interest and assistance with this important project!
