The Elkhart Public Library is holding a sale of mid century modern furniture from the original 1963 library opening. Items include Herman Miller tables, chairs, desks, and Jens Risom designs. If you have always wanted to own a Charles Eames fiberglass chair this is your chance. The list and pictures are up online, open viewing times are set for later this week, and bidding begins next Monday and ends Friday.

In a rather odd juxtaposition, this stuff was manufactured in my home town when I was a little kid living next door to a Herman Miller wood worker. I own 8 of those lovely fiberglass chairs with arms in a nice royal blue, that spent the first 30 years of their lives in my father’s office waiting room. I went through college with a round white Herman Miller table and four orange chairs, originally purchased for the screen porch at our new house in 1964. (Somehow I lost the orange chairs in my brother’s divorce.) The table and two of the blue chairs are currently living in Indianapolis in my daughter’s home.
