If you own a domain name drop everything you're doing and check the expiration date right now!
Some @ the Ocean County Library
should've done that a few months ago, their name has been purchased by someone else. The library's administration has been trying to reclaim the familiar name of its Web site since it discovered the problem earlier this month.

I'm so very hesitant to criticize these folks because I'm so very afraid this is going to happen to me! I manage so many domain names now it could easily happen to me. I can see how it would be very easy for this to happen to a library as well. I have such a fear of this happening I check once a month, even though every January I renew almost everything for the coming year.
So while I'll agree this was a rather careless mistake, I feel really bad, and I see how easily this can happen.

I was thinking the same thing, and then I decided to look at my registrations and there is on that expires in 11 days. I do get emails about them but sometimes I am a bit slow to respond to them. --

As far as I know, my registrar works on an opt-out basis: That is, as long as they have a current credit card #, they'll renew automatically unless I tell them not to (and yes, there's an advance email). At least that's how it worked this year...comforting, that, especially since they're a relatively cheap registrar (1&1). [
