Related Links Kenyan Mobile Library Service Comes via Camel posted by AmyBA on 12:32 AM March 9th, 2007 The poor and rural areas populated by nomadic tribes in northeastern Kenya receive mobile library services delivered by camel . Tables, chairs, tents, and books are brought out by the Kenya National Library to serve communities up to 15 km away from the North East Province capital city of Garissa.The target population of these library services are children and youth, girls in particular. Says provincial librarian Sheikh Rashid Mohamed Farah, "Right now, we have quite (a) number of them in the universities -- a good number of young boys and girls from this province who have gone to the university as a result of library services which we are providing." Related Stories Camel Book Drive Camel Book Drive : Though The Camel Bookmobile (HarperCollins, April 2007) is a novel, the camel-borne library actually exists. It operates in Kenya's isolated Northeastern Province near the unstable border with Somalia. It brings books to a semi-nomadic people who live with drought, famine and chonic poverty. The books are spread out on grass mats beneath an acacia tree, and the library patrons, often barefoot, sometimes joined by goats or donkeys, gather with great excitement to choose their books until the next visit.
