Enter your local library and you might observe patrons using the chat lines as a way to meet a potential mate. I know of several local libraries that have placed a \”No chat on this computer\” sign above a few terminals and to no avail. Anyone can install a chat line from the interet in a dew minutes. How can one enforce a no chat policy when as librarians we are supposed to provide equal access to information?
However, is a chat line informational when it is used to meet members of the opposite sex? Unfortunately, there are perverts out there and I can see the headlines now \”Librarian gave my son/daughter access to chat lines where they met someone and was stalked.\” It can happen. While chat lines are not exactly the same as pornography, you can only imagine some of the offensive language I have seen patrons write.
Many people meet online and have successful romances or marriage and I am happy for them. Do you think any librarians out there are getting paid a matchmaker\’s fee? I don\’t think so. There once one something called romance and dating without a computer involved. I guess I would just like to see patrons using chat for purposes other than making \”romantic connections\” in the library.
